Express Love to Mothers with Paper Flowers - Mother's Day "Flowers with Love" Origami Workshops

Hong Kong, 4 May 2015 -- The Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA)  and Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) co-organised two 'Flowers with Love' origami workshops    for children in To Kwa Wan and Tuen Mun districts of Hong Kong. The programme aims to teach children how to make paper gifts for their mothers for the upcoming Mother's Day. HKGYOU Association  provided volunteer support.

The workshops were held at various BGCA community centres, during which children learnt how to make paper flowers, gift cards and various other kinds of gifts. The workshops allowed children to celebrate Mother's Day in an economic way, and also taught the participants how sustainably-produced paper can be environmentally friendly and that caring for the environment should be a part of their daily lives.

'Many children wish to buy flowers and gifts for their mothers on Mother's Day, but not all children can afford it. We believe that lacking of resources should not limit young children from conveying their gratitude and love, so we organised the 'Flowers with Love' origami workshops with APP,' said Candy Chow, Centre-in-Charge of BGCA Lok Man Children & Family Integrated Activity Centre.

'Paper is affordable and easily accessible by most children, and we can see they enjoyed the interaction and had fun learning how to make paper gifts by themselves. The 'Flowers with Love' origami workshops are meaningful to both the children and their mothers, and is an opportunity to strengthen the parent-child relationship,' added Chow.

'APP is glad to work with BGCA and contribute to the community,' said Lois Cheng, Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement Manager (Hong Kong) for Asia Pulp & Paper. 'Flowers tend to be more expensive during festival seasons and they do not last long, generating waste and increasing the burden on the environment. Through the workshops, we hope the children will rediscover the use of paper to express love and other feelings -- by writing a card or making a gift with paper -- just like our parents and grandparents used to do so. Paper is easily accessible but it can carry loads of love and be kept for many years. Being easily recyclable and environmentally friendly, if produced sustainably, paper is a good choice to show our love and care to both our loved ones and also the environment.'
